ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 – England and Wales

This summer 10 teams from around the world will compete in the 12th ICC Cricket World Cup. The tournament is expected to be watched by around 2.5billion people worldwide with the final attracting around 1.3billion viewers.

The last world cup saw Australia beat rivals New Zealand in the final to make it 4 wins out of the last 5 World Cups and will be hoping to assert their dominance once again – but with England ranked number 1 in the world this year and hosting the tournament, there is no better time to get behind the team.

Get involved

Throughout the World Cup tournament, the England and Wales Cricket Board want to get 1 million children engaged in various cricket events by encouraging local grass roots clubs to register and become a “Cricket World Cup Club” and be part of the “World’s Greatest Cricket Celebration”.

Get in touch with your local club to find out what events they are planning for the World Cup – if they have not already registered get them to fill in the form on the Cricket World Cup website.

You can find your local club on the England and Wales Cricket Board website – the search form includes local amateur and grassroots teams / clubs right up to your elite level county team so there will definitely be something to suit!

These events are open to all clubs, centres and communities and is designed to engage a new audience and to get children involved who otherwise would not be.

For clubs who sign up for the World Cup Club package you can expect a whole host of fun activities and events for the whole family, including Parent & Child matches // Women’s and Girl’s matches // Bouncy Castles // Face Painting // BBQs // Bake Offs // Trivia Nights // Discos // Kwik Cricket // Softball Cricket.

As well as the activities above, all clubs signed up will be able to broadcast each and every match during the World Cup so is a great way of getting to know like minded fans in your area.

Around the Grounds

In total, 48 matches will be played at 11 stadiums across the country with the tournament starting and ending in London.
The tournament will be a single group of 10 teams, with each team playing the other nine once. The top four at the end of the group phase will progress to the semi-finals with the winners competing in the final at Lords Cricket Ground on Sunday 14 July.

Bristol County Ground

3 matches will be played in Bristol. One of the most one sided looking fixtures of the tournament will see Afghanistan taking on reigning champions Australia before 2 match ups featuring local rivals for what looks to be a great atmosphere in the South West.

Cardiff Wales Stadium

Throughout the first 2 weeks of June, 4 matches will be played at the relatively new Cardiff Wales Stadium, including England who take on Bangladesh on Saturday 8 June.

County Ground – Taunton

There will be 3 more matches played at The County Ground – Taunton, as the South West hosts another stadium that already looks to be full to the rafters. The highlight here looks to be an epic contest between Australia and Pakistan as the two test match rivals go head to head in the one-day version of the game.

Edgbaston

Home to the Warwickshire Bears, this 25,000 seater stadium will play host to 4 absolutely mouth-watering ties as some of the biggest names in world cricket descend on Birmingham. The matches include one of the most colourful, passionate and atmospheric ties the sport can produce when England take on India who also happen to be the top 2 teams in the world rankings this year – if all this wasn’t enough Edgbaston is also hosting one of the Semi-Finals too.

Hampshire Bowl – Southampton

Down on the south coast the Hampshire Bowl will host 5 matches, including South Africa vs India – the top ranked teams in the world outside England! The fixture list here in Southampton is full of big names, heavy hitters and the highest ranked teams all seem to cross paths here! One of world cricket’s most exciting fixtures, England vs West Indies, will also be in Southampton.

Headingley

4 matches will be played in this famous historic cricket venue in sunny Leeds! Expect a lot of colour, passion and noise as the rain falls with Sri Lanka and Pakistan both playing twice here.

Lords

Widely regarded as the home of cricket, Lords cricket ground in London is named after its founder, Thomas Lord. It is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and is the home of Middlesex County Cricket Club, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the European Cricket Council and, until August 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC). With 5 matches taking place here including the most famous fixture in the international cricket calendar as England face off against the old enemy Australia. The tournament will culminate here with the Final, where 5 billion eyes will be fixed on the crease.

Old Trafford

Manchester will play host to 6 matches, including a semi-final making it the busiest venue of the tournament – let’s all hope for break in the weather as some of the biggest names in world cricket will battle it out here, including old rivals India and Pakistan.

The Oval

Kicking off the tournament in London, The Oval is hosting 5 matches including the opening fixture between two of the biggest teams in the world cup as England, ranked number 1 in the world, take on South Africa who are ranked 3rd. The Oval will also see India vs South Africa in a 2nd vs 3rd place in the world rankings for what looks to be one of the best sets of matches around the grounds.

The Riverside – Durham

Not normally associated with sunny skies and long afternoons, The Riverside in the North of England will be hosting 3 fixtures throughout the world cup with big hitting Sri Lanka playing two tough fixtures against South Africa and The West Indies – fans can expect runs galore on this small picturesque coastal ground.

Trent Bridge

This Victorian ground is widely regarded as the most picturesque, beautiful and traditional grounds in world cricket. In constant use since 1830s it is one of, if not THE oldest cricket ground still in use today anywhere in the world. Recently it has seen two stands redeveloped and a whole host of new facilities that have bought this 190-year-old cricket venue right into the 21st Century. Expect runs, runs and more runs as this is the pitch that England destroyed the world record runs score in June 2018 with an eye watering 481/6.
